What is Medicare Part D?
Prescription Drug Coverage
Original Medicare does NOT include coverage for Prescriptions. This means you MUST purchase either a Medicare Advantage Plan/Part C/MAPD (includes Drug Coverage) or a Stand-Alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP).
If you do not purchase Prescription Drug Coverage when you first become eligible for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), you will incur a Lifetime Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP) when you finally do. Please click on the button below to learn more.
Exciting news for 2025!!!
There will no longer be a Doughnut Hole (Coverage Gap)!!
Drug Costs are capped at $2,000. Then you enter Catastrophic Coverage, and everything is $0 as long as your prescription is Medically Necessary and covered in the Formulary of your Drug or Medicare Advantage Plan.
For Medicare Beneficiaries with High Drug Costs, CMS developed the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (M3P) where your Drug Costs can be spread out throughout the year, versus paying everything up front all at once.

Some individuals may not have to worry about the Part D LEP if they already have Creditable Drug Coverage. Click on the image to your right to learn how Medicare Part D works with other Insurance Plans.
