Is Medicare unaffordable?
Even though you’ve paid Medicare Taxes your entire life, that money is only applied towards the Original Medicare Part A (Hospital) Premium.
In 2024, Original Medicare Part B (Outpatient Provider Visits) has a monthly premium of $174.70. Unless you’re in a Group Health Insurance Plan through your employer, you MUST have both Medicare Parts A&B to enroll into most types of Medicare plans.
If you waive Medicare Part B and are not enrolled in a Health Plan through your Employer, you will incur a monthly lifetime Late Enrollment Penalty (LEP). LEPs are explained in the Medicare & You Handbook above.
If the Medicare Part B premium is unaffordable, some Medicare beneficiaries may qualify for the Extra Help / Low Income Subsidy (LIS) Program.
